Trimester-by-Trimester Antenatal Surveillance & Ultrasound Schedule

Every pregnancy benefits from structured, longitudinal clinical monitoring designed to safeguard both maternal wellbeing and foetal development. At Dr Tebo Rasenyai Inc, antenatal consultations are scheduled every four weeks until 28 weeks of gestation, every two weeks between 28 and 36 weeks, and weekly from 36 weeks until birth.

Each visit includes maternal blood pressure profiling, urine dipstick screening for proteinuria and asymptomatic bacteriuria, symphysis-fundal growth assessment, and point-of-care obstetric ultrasound to evaluate foetal cardiac activity, amniotic fluid volume, placental localisation, and estimated foetal weight.

  • First Trimester (8–13+6 weeks): Confirmation of intrauterine viability, gestational dating, baseline antenatal blood panel (blood group, Rhesus factor, haemoglobin, rubella, syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B screening), and chromosomal risk assessment.
  • Second Trimester (14–27 weeks): Detailed foetal structural anomaly scan (18–22 weeks), cervical length assessment where indicated, and oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) between 24 and 28 weeks.
  • Third Trimester (28–40+ weeks): Serial foetal growth velocity scans, umbilical artery Doppler assessment when clinically indicated, cardiotocography (CTG) foetal heart rate monitoring, and mode-of-delivery planning.

How to Prepare for Your First Prenatal Visit (8–10 Weeks)

We encourage expectant mothers to schedule their first antenatal consultation between 8 and 10 weeks from the first day of their last menstrual period (LMP). Early booking allows us to establish the most accurate expected date of delivery (EDD), identify any maternal risk factors early, and initiate appropriate folic acid, iron, and calcium supplementation.

Before arriving at Suite D, Room 2, please gather your personal and family medical history — including any history of high blood pressure, thyroid disorder, diabetes, previous caesarean delivery, or twin gestation. For early transabdominal ultrasound scans, arriving with a moderately full bladder (drinking 3 glasses of water an hour prior) assists in clear visualisation of the early gestational sac.

Labour, Delivery & Postnatal Care at Clinix Victoria Private Hospital

All deliveries are conducted at Clinix Victoria Private Hospital in Mahikeng, where our consulting suite is located on the First Floor. Expectant mothers benefit from dedicated labour suites, continuous electronic foetal monitoring, epidural analgesia availability, modern obstetric operating theatres, and on-site paediatric and neonatal intensive care support.

Following birth, Dr Rasenyai conducts daily inpatient ward rounds to monitor uterine involution, perineal or caesarean wound healing, lactation establishment, and maternal emotional wellbeing, followed by a comprehensive 6-week postnatal check-up and contraceptive review.

Medical Aid Maternity Benefits & Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs)

Once your pregnancy is confirmed on ultrasound during your booking visit, our reception team provides the clinical confirmation certificate required to activate your medical aid scheme's dedicated Maternity Programme (such as GEMS Maternity Programme, Discovery MyPregnancy, Bonitas Maternity, or Momentum Baby).

Registering on your scheme's maternity programme unlocks additional insured benefits for antenatal consultations, 2D pregnancy ultrasound scans, antenatal pathology blood tests, and hospital admission authorisation without depleting your day-to-day medical savings.

Ready when you are.

All medical aids welcome, with no co-payments on consultations.

FAQs

Patients often ask

At how many weeks should I book my first pregnancy appointment?

Ideally, schedule your first antenatal visit between 8 and 10 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period. However, if you experience pelvic pain, vaginal spotting, severe nausea and vomiting (hyperemesis), or have a history of ectopic pregnancy or recurrent miscarriage, please contact us earlier at 6 to 7 weeks.

Should my bladder be full for my pregnancy ultrasound scan?

In the first trimester (up to 12 weeks), a moderately full bladder helps lift the uterus out of the pelvis for a clear transabdominal scan. From the second trimester onwards, a full bladder is usually not required unless specifically requested for placental localisation.

Can my partner attend antenatal consultations and ultrasound scans?

Yes. Partners are warmly encouraged to attend antenatal appointments and ultrasound scans in Suite D, Room 2 so that both parents can participate in birth planning and ask questions.

How do I obtain hospital pre-authorisation for my delivery at Clinix Victoria?

Our practice provides the official maternity confirmation letter, expected date of delivery, and ICD-10 diagnostic and procedure codes required by your medical aid scheme to issue your hospital admission authorisation number.
